Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come in, usually in the late teens or early twenties. For some people they arrive with no trouble. For others there is not enough room, and they need to come out.
The first thing most people ask is what it will cost. The answer depends on where your teeth are and how they grew in. Here is what changes the price.
A wisdom tooth that has fully come through the gum is usually the simplest to remove. It comes out much like any other tooth.
A tooth that is partly or fully under the gum takes more work. If it is also stuck in the bone or tilted against the tooth beside it, it is called impacted. Taking it out can mean opening the gum and removing a little bone, which takes longer.
We have a cone beam CT scanner, which takes a 3D picture of the jaw. It shows us where the roots are before we begin.
We freeze the area with local anesthetic, the same kind used for a filling, and wait until it is fully numb. You feel pressure, not pain. If you prefer to do one side at a time, we can.
It all happens in our own office, so there is no referral across town.
Tooth removal is on the list of services the Canadian Dental Care Plan covers. How much the plan pays depends on your family income, and a dentist can charge more than the plan’s set fee. We tell you what the plan covers, and what it does not, before you agree to anything.
Many private insurance plans pay part of an extraction too. Bring your plan details and we can help you check.

Taking a tooth out before an infection starts is usually simpler than treating one first.
