What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is a problem in your mouth that cannot wait for a regular visit. Pain that will not go away, a tooth that is knocked out or broken, swelling and bleeding all count.

If your face swells fast, or it is hard to breathe or swallow, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Not sure if what you’re experiencing is considered an emergency? Here are some of the most common dental emergencies we treat:

Severe toothache

Knocked-out or partially dislodged tooth

Cracked or broken teeth

Gum swelling or infection

Severe swelling of the face or jaw causing discomfort or difficulty breathing

Dental abscess (a localized infection causing pain, swelling, or fever)

Bleeding that doesn’t stop

What to Do in the First Hour

What you do in the first hour can save a tooth. Call us at 519-472-4460 as soon as you can, then follow these steps until you see us. Whether you need an emergency tooth extraction or fast relief from pain, we are ready to help.

Knocked-out tooth
Pick it up by the crown, the part you chew with, and rinse it gently with warm water. Try to put it back in the socket or in a cup of milk, and come in right away.

Broken or cracked tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces you find. A cold pack on your cheek helps with pain and swelling.

Bad toothache
Rinse with warm water and floss gently to clear out any food caught near the tooth. Then phone us so we can find what is causing the pain.

Swelling or an abscess
Swelling can mean an infection, so call us the same day. A cold pack on the outside of your cheek can help until you see us.

Bleeding that will not stop
Press clean gauze on the spot and bite down gently. If the bleeding does not slow down, call us or go to the emergency room.

Not sure if it is an emergency? Give us a call anyway, and our team will help you decide.

Emergency Room or Emergency Dentist?

Many people with tooth pain wonder if they should go to the hospital. The ER is the right place if your face is swelling fast or it is hard to breathe. For most tooth problems, a dentist is the one who can fix the tooth.

An ER can help with pain and infection, but it usually does not fix the tooth itself. Read what an ER will do for tooth pain and whether the ER will pull an infected tooth to see what to expect there.

Some patients are sent from the ER to a hospital dental team. Learn when a hospital will pull a tooth in Ontario, and when an emergency dentist will pull a tooth.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While not all dental emergencies can be avoided, taking proactive steps can greatly reduce your risk. Regular dental check-ups, maintaining good oral hygiene, and following a healthy diet are essential for preventing dental problems that could lead to emergencies. Avoid chewing on hard foods or candies, and be mindful during sports or physical activities that could result in injuries to your mouth or teeth. Wearing a mouthguard during sports is a simple but effective way to protect your teeth from unexpected impacts.

If you notice pain or swelling in your mouth, do not wait. Book a visit with a dentist in London, Ontario, as soon as you can. Small problems are easier to fix early, before they turn into emergencies.

Emergency Dental FAQs

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with warm water (do not scrub), and try to place it back in the socket or in a container of milk. Call us immediately.

Can I go to the ER for a dental emergency?

Go to the ER if your face is swelling fast or it is hard to breathe or swallow. For most tooth problems, an ER can help with pain and infection, then sends you to a dentist to fix the tooth. So in most cases, call us first.

Will I be seen the same day?

We make every effort to see emergency patients the same day. The earlier you phone, the easier it is to fit you in. After hours, call the same number for help.

What if I don’t have insurance?

We see emergency patients with or without insurance. Before we treat you, we tell you the cost of each step so there are no surprises. We are also a registered Canadian Dental Care Plan provider.

Is swelling a dental emergency?

Yes, especially if you also have pain or a fever. Swelling can be a sign of infection and should be treated as soon as possible. If it is hard to breathe or swallow, call 911.

What should I do in case of dental injuries?

Prompt action is important for dental injuries, especially in children. Contact our clinic immediately to help protect oral health and prevent complications.
