Root Canal Cost in Ontario Without Insurance

A root canal sounds expensive, and a lot of people put it off because they are worried about the bill. That delay can turn a tooth we could save into one that has to come out.

We are not going to give you one number here. A fair price depends on your tooth, and nobody can see that from a web page. What we can do is show you what moves the price up or down.

The tooth makes the biggest difference

Front teeth usually have one canal. Back teeth, the molars, can have three or four. Every canal has to be cleaned out and sealed, so a molar takes longer and costs more than a front tooth.

What else adds to it

  • X-rays before and after the treatment.
  • A tooth that was treated before and needs a second root canal, which is more work than the first.
  • A curved or narrow canal that is hard to reach.
  • A crown afterwards, which most back teeth need.

The crown is the part people forget. A tooth that has had a root canal gets more brittle. On a molar, a crown usually protects it from cracking later, so ask about it at the same visit.

Why saving the tooth often costs less in the end

The other choice is taking the tooth out. That can look cheaper on the day.

But a missing tooth usually needs replacing later with a bridge, an implant or a partial denture. Replacing a tooth often costs more than saving it.

Leaving the gap has a cost too. The teeth beside it start to drift and tip, which can change your bite.

How the CDCP and insurance change it

Root canals are on the list of services the Canadian Dental Care Plan covers. A second root canal on the same tooth, called a re-treatment, needs approval from the plan before we start.

How much the plan pays depends on your family income, and a dentist can charge more than the plan’s set fee. We tell you what the plan covers, and what it does not, before you agree to anything.

With private insurance, many plans pay part of a root canal. The share depends on your plan, so bring your details and we can help you check.

How we price it

After we look at the tooth and take an x-ray, we tell you what your treatment will cost before we begin. You know the number before you say yes.
